“I’ve become the leader I am today because of the support I received from educators in Denver Public Schools like Mr. Brookes, who have helped guide my journey.”

geoff_mr.brookesGeoffrey has become an extraordinary leader because of the challenging curriculum, inspirational educators and positive relationships he’s built over the years in DPS schools. He is a now a senior at South High School, graduating this spring, and his dream is to be on the big screen as an actor. Geoffrey plans to attend University of California Los Angeles next year while pursuing his business degree with an emphasis on marketing and public relations; he has already been recruited and landed an acting job with a local Los Angeles company!

“Geoffrey is a leader and model student for younger kids,” says Mr. Brookes, the first teacher who met Geoffrey at South High School. Geoffrey has been named the head boy because of his participation in multiple clubs and activities. He serves in a leadership capacity for the Student Board of Education, Senate, Collaborative School Committee and Lacrosse to name a few.South 2014 Seniors

Talented students like Geoffrey and committed teachers like Mr. Brookes are helping DPS move in the right direction! DPS continues to post strong, steady improvement in its four-year “on-time” graduation rate, which has increased by over 20 percentage points over the past five years. This means hundreds more students are graduating on-time each year ready for college and career. DPS Superintendent Tom Boasberg attributes a part of the success on the high expectations that are being set for the students.

DSC_0733Last week, DPS Superintendent Tom Boasberg, South High School Principal Kristin Waters, and others gathered to talk with South High School seniors about their path to high school graduation and their plans for pursuing post-secondary education. Students shared personal stories of their DPS journey. As the students spoke you could feel their emotion in how proud they are to be part of DPS, and South High School; a positive and supportive environment that has cultivated leadership, pride and joy in each one of them.

“It is terrific to see hundreds more students earning their high school diplomas, and I am very grateful to our teachers and principals for their hard work that is making this happen,” said DPS Superintendent Tom Boasberg. “While we still have much further to go in reaching our goal of graduating every student prepared for success in college and career, we continue to make strong and steady progress.”
