Comcast Presents DPS Foundation with Over $12,000 for Programs that Improve Student Achievement
DENVER, Sept. 22, 2008 – On Tuesday, Sept. 23, Comcast will present the Denver Public Schools Foundation with $12,510 from the Comcast Foundation in recognition of volunteer efforts for Comcast Cares Day. Senior Vice President Scott Binder will present the check to DPS Superintendent Michael Bennet at an assembly at Place Bridge Academy, 7125 Cherry Creek Drive North, at 1:40 p.m.
Once again this year, Comcast mobilized their employees on Comcast Cares Day to make a hands-on difference in Denver schools. More than 400 individuals worked at Montbello High School and Place Bridge Academy doing painting and landscaping this spring. Comcast’s work will help to ensure students at these schools have a safe and appealing school environment that shows the students they are valued and supported by the community.
The funding from the Comcast Foundation will support the initiatives of the Denver Public Schools Foundation, which funds a variety of after-school tutoring and enrichment programs in DPS, the elementary school science curriculum, and professional development for principals and teachers.
The gift is just another extension of Comcast’s ongoing partnership with Denver Public Schools. Throughout the year, the company partners with Place and Montbello to provide tutors, books, supplies and other educational materials, and to assist the students in Montbello’s video production program gain exposure to career options. Comcast also produces a video each year for the DPS Foundation gala.
"Comcast is a shining example of a great corporate citizen,” said Barbara Berv, president/CEO of the DPS Foundation. “They are involved in so many ways – not just providing financial assistance, but also doing hands-on work and lending their expertise to make our schools stronger. This kind of effort makes a real difference to our students.”
"A strong school system is the cornerstone of a strong economy and a healthy community,” said Scott Binder, senior vice president for Comcast. “Comcast recognizes the important role that business involvement can play in improving our schools and ensuring that they have the resources they need to drive student achievement. Supporting education is an issue that we take very seriously.”
