Business Partnerships Making a Difference in Denver Public Schools

DPS Foundation to launch second year of the School Partners Program

DENVER, Aug. 30, 2007– "Back to school" has new meaning this year for many local businesses now part of the School Partners Program.

Piloted last year with generous support from the Qwest Foundation, the School Partners Program creates tailor-made partnerships between DPS schools and businesses. The program has more than doubled from 21 schools in 2006-07 to 43 schools and over 25 community partners in 2007-08.

A kick-off breakfast to welcome this year’s participating schools and businesses was held on August 30 at the Pepsi Center. Speakers included Barbara Berv, president and CEO of the DPS Foundation; DPS Superintendent Michael Bennet; Chuck Ward, president of Qwest Colorado; Paul Andrews, executive vice president and chief marketing officer of Kroenke Sports Enterprises; Lola Salazar, president of the Salazar Family Foundation; and Norma Giron, principal of Fairview Elementary School.

The Qwest Foundation is the official sponsor of the overall program. With their support, the program provides a convenient way for businesses and community organizations to get more involved in helping DPS schools. Partners provide both financial and volunteer support – lending their expertise, capabilities, and resources to help address specific school and student needs.

"As businesses we owe it to our schools to assure an educated workforce for the future. It can make a significant difference for a child to see a business person in school and help make our schools world class," said Chuck Ward, president of Qwest Colorado.

With the addition of 22 new schools to the program this year, more businesses are needed. Support can range from mentoring and tutoring to sponsoring teacher appreciation events, assisting with individual school marketing campaigns, helping with school improvement projects, and much more. Participation on any level can make a positive impact on DPS schools and students.
