Studies show that programs outside of school time help students improve their attitude toward school,

improve their grades & test scores, increase class attendance, and develop better work habits.

After School & Summer Programs

Funding from the DPS Foundation provides diverse after-school programs for nearly 15,000 DPS students every year. After-school programs improve school attendance, decrease dropout rates and provide critical opportunities for enriching extracurricular activities that help a child develop their skills and creativity.

Experts say the hours between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. are peak hours for youth to engage in a variety of risky behaviors. Fortunately, students in Denver Public Schools have a fun, safe alternative – they can participate in a variety of after school programs offered at their own schools throughout the year.

After-school and summer programs in DPS allow students to develop new talents, get extra help with their school work, enjoy arts and music classes, and play sports. These programs also provide a supervised environment for students, offering new opportunities for learning, social development and recreation.

After-school Programs

  • Tutoring ServicesProvides tutoring in literacy and math for students in grades 3-10
  • Lights on After SchoolProvides after-school programs in the arts, academics, athletics and leadership for elementary and middle school students
  • Fit Fun & Literacy A daily after-school program focusing on physical activity, literacy, and nutritional education for students in the neediest elementary schools
  • Prep League Sports The official middle school sports league in DPS, offering students in grades 6-8 the chance to play a variety of competitive sports after school

Summer Programs

  • Denver CAMP A free summer camp program targeted at students from low-income or homeless families
  • English Language Acquisition AcademyA summer academy that helps English language learners in grades 1-4 continue developing their language skills during the school break

Unfortunately, limited school budgets cannot support these activities on their own. DPS relies on funding from caring donors to keep these important programs in place.
