Summer is more than halfway over for DPS students! Where does the time go? For hundreds of DPS kids, the summer break has been spent learning – and playing! – in Denver Public Schools. Thanks to the Beacons Neighborhood Center Camps (operated by the Boys & Girls Club of Metro Denver) at five DPS schools throughout Denver, kids who might not have fun or safe summer alternatives are engaged in academic and enrichment activities like…

Sports and physical education, keeping kids active and healthy all summer long.

Physical Education and Nutrition

Intensive reading and writing classes, helping students be better prepared for the coming school year.

Reading and Writing Classes

Hands-on arts and science projects that allow students to develop their creativity and love of learning.

Hands-on Learning

Here’s what the campers are saying:

“This month I learned a lot of things. One of the things I learned was that vocabulary is hard but a lot of fun. I learned how to pronounce words and how to split words and make new words. I feel I can read better!” – Aaron, 6th Grade.

“I love camp so much that I never want to leave.  I want to sleep here tonight!” – Ruth, 1st Grade

Most of the kids enrolled in Beacons Camps would have no safe alternative in the summer months. They might instead spend the out of school months engaging in risky behavior, or unsupervised, bored and lonely at home. Many would experience the “summer slide” – a loss of proficiency for students who are not engaged in summer academic or enrichment activities.
