Summer Slide:

kids-runningNEWWhen the doors close for the summer, many students struggle to access educational and enrichment opportunities. “Summer slide” is the loss of learning over summer break. The learning loss that often happens over the summer months puts students further behind and widens the opportunity gap. Studies show that more than half of the opportunity gap between lower and higher income youth can be explained by unequal access to summer learning opportunities.

Many middle class families also struggle to find affordable child care and learning opportunities for their kids during the summer months. Read this New York Times article to learn more.

See how your investment in the Denver Public Schools Foundation supports DPS students. Your contribution could help support programs where students can continue to stay engaged in the summer time: caucasianchildCareerConnect, Each One Teach One and Prep League all offer summer enrichment opportunities for students.

Check out other resources that DPS has for summer learning, fun activities and access to the My Denver Card here. Be sure to pass along to other families who might be interested too!
