Students from McAuliffe Elementary were among the first in the nation to experience what life on Mars would be like thanks to the DPS Foundation’s partnership with Lockheed Martin and Project Lead the Way. Students “traveled” the martian landscape, exploring STEM concepts, and learned about the Red Planet on the first-ever interactive virtual-reality vehicle.

Building on the success of DPS’ career education programming, a first-of-its-kind partnership with JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Bloomberg Philanthropies expanded apprenticeship opportunities for high school students to equip them with high-demand skills for lucrative careers and post-secondary opportunities, and expanded opportunities for K-8 students thanks to a $4 million grant. Narrowing from 10 student band hopefuls, the top three finalists performed in front of music industry insiders, concert promoter Chuck Morris and Grammy-nominated songwriter and record producer Eric Foster White, for the chance to play at a sold-out concert with Michael Franti at the Ogden Theatre.

Insider Event Showcase: Career Pathways

Career education classes were celebrated as strategies to close the opportunity gap as well as put students on a path for bright futures. A panel discussion was held that featured DPS senior Ahmed Twaige (pictured), DPS alumna Megan Trail (pictured), and DPS leadership at DPS high school Career Education Early College (CEC), which started career education in the 1970s. Today: Megan explained how she learned skills at CEC that gave her a successful 13-year career and lifted her out of poverty. Tomorrow: Ahmed shared how his health classes helped him realize his path into medicine. He is currently enrolled in pre-med as an undergraduate. 25th Anniversary Achieve Gala

Students from across DPS took center stage at Achieve Gala 2017, along with presenting sponsor United Airlines, as the DPS Foundation celebrated 25 years of investing in DPS students and schools. We “Celebrated Yesterday and Embraced Tomorrow” where fourth-grade student Serenity shared how her teachers believe she can achieve her dreams; senior student Elijah (pictured) discussed his plans for a future in construction and how he chose this career; and DPS graduate Daniel said he would not be in college pursuing his goal of becoming a doctor without the doors that were opened for him thanks to DPS and the DPS Foundation.

More than 5,000 students performed at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts Complex to showcase their acting abilities and demonstrate the dance, vocal and instrumental music of the era at the 33rd Annual Shakespeare Festival, the largest and oldest student Shakespeare event in the country.

Thirteen DPS school sites were given makeovers to enliven and brighten their learning environment thanks to 1,400 volunteers from Comcast who turned out in force for Comcast Cares Day, the single largest volunteer event for the DPS Foundation School Partners Program.

Broncos and Noble Energy Day of Service

Noble Energy/Denver Broncos “Red Zone Program” Donations Surpassed $100,000 over past three football seasons. To mark the occasion, Noble Energy and Denver Broncos employees joined together at Cheltenham Elementary for a day of service benefiting students and the school. The employees helped with the school’s field day and carnival, painted hallways and moved classrooms. The day ended with 50 students taking a special field trip to Sports Authority Field at Mile High for a tour of the stadium and presentation of a check to the DPS Foundation. Learn More

More than 130 members of the Denver community ran to raise money for DPS students at the Colfax Marathon at City Park, raising more than $17,000.

Power Lunch Celebration

Students from Valverde Elementary visited Bridgepoint Education’s Ashford University office to celebrate Ashford’s commitment to early literacy efforts. Ashford and its employees have participated in Power Lunch for five years, the longest-running corporate partner in Power Lunch, a program partnership of the DPS Foundation, Mile High United Way and DPS Office of Family and Community Engagement that fosters students’ love of reading through weekly hour-long one-on-one reading sessions between students and volunteers.

Through special partnerships created by the DPS Foundation, DPS families and the Denver community took part in athletic and cultural events that benefit our schools. From watching Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche and Colorado Rockies games, to seeing performances at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts Complex, students were able to experience arts and culture within our community. As an added bonus, a portion of these ticket proceeds benefited DPS students and schools! “I wanted to express my gratitude for offering discounted tickets to the Secret Garden performance at the DCPA. This is such a lovely story that my 7-year-old has really enjoyed reading with me! And, even though we really wanted to attend the show, the regular ticket prices were a little out of our budget. The discounted prices are just what we needed to make it possible for us to attend.” – Sonia, DPS parent
