During Black History Month, we recognize the educators whose leadership shapes not only academic achievement, but the sense of belonging and possibility students carry with them long after they leave the classroom. At the Denver Public Schools Foundation, we know that supporting educator growth is a powerful way to strengthen entire school communities. For Melody Noble, educator at Montclair School of Academic & Enrichment, participating in the Denver Public Schools Foundation’s Educators Take Flight program was more than a professional development opportunity. It was, in her words, “a renewal of purpose.”
Through Educators Take Flight, Melody attended the National Alliance of Black School Educators (NABSE) Conference, a national gathering of Black educators, leaders, and advocates committed to advancing excellence and equity in education.

For Melody, the experience was both professionally strengthening and personally affirming. “My experience at the NABSE conference was incredibly empowering and transformative,” Melody shared. Being surrounded by Black educators and leaders created “a sense of belonging and shared purpose that I don’t often get to experience in my day-to-day work.” The sessions offered research-based strategies and practical tools she could immediately bring back to her school community. For her, representation was the most impactful element. She noted the importance of “seeing educators and leaders who look like me, who understand the unique challenges and opportunities in our work, and who are actively shaping the future of education.” Beyond the sessions themselves, Melody also made valuable connections. She built relationships with colleagues, mentors, and partners equally passionate about student success and family engagement. The experience strengthened her professional toolkit and deepened her dedication to equity-centered teaching. Those insights are now visible in the way she leads each day. “This experience reminded me that my presence is part of the instruction,” Melody said.
She’s not just teaching standards, she’s building safety, identity, and confidence in real time. Now, she says, “I show up with an even deeper commitment to being the adult my students can trust; someone who sees them fully, speaks life over them, and refuses to let them shrink in any space.” She feels more confident naming what students need, advocating without apologizing, and leading from both excellence and love.
While she returned with renewed vision and practical strategies, what stayed with her most was something less tangible. “I brought back energy. And I’m bringing it back on purpose every day, for kids and families.” At Montclair, that energy is translating into stronger systems for student voice, family partnership, and learning that feels relevant and culturally responsive. She believes that her community already holds brilliance, “we’re just creating the conditions for it to shine.” Her vision extends to families as well. She wants families to know, “you belong here, and your child is safe with us.”
Melody’s commitment extends well beyond her own classroom. “I’m sharing what I learned with other educators and community partners because this work doesn’t stay in one classroom,” she explained. Melody believes that when we pour into educators, students thrive and she is committed to cultivating spaces where educators feel supported and inspired.
Through the Educators Take Flight program, the Denver Public Schools Foundation in partnership with United Airlines, provides educators with transformative travel-based learning experiences that expand their perspective, strengthen their leadership, and bring renewed inspiration back to Denver Public Schools classrooms. Melody’s experience reminds us that when educators grow, entire school communities grow with them. This Black History Month, we celebrate leaders like Melody Noble who cultivate possibility and create spaces where students feel seen, valued, and empowered. Through continued investment in educator leadership, the Denver Public Schools Foundation remains committed to ensuring every Denver Public Schools student learns in an environment rooted in belonging and opportunity.
