Mary Waters, Hogan Lovells office administrator, as the Queen of England greets Cheltenham students.

London Calling!

On May 25, students from Cheltenham Elementary School visited Hogan Lovells Law Firm in Denver for a special video call and cultural exchange with their English counterparts from several London primary schools.

The visit began with the “Queen” Mary Waters, Hogan Lovells’ office administrator, who had rented a beautiful Queen Elizabeth costume for the occasion, greeting the third-graders, which we found was an absolutely adorable and thoughtful gesture. Once at the office, the students gathered around a conference room table and met their new friends from 4,000 miles away on the screen. After some exuberant waving on both sides, they took turns to share favorite foods, sports and school activities. The students from London talked about preparations for the upcoming summer Olympics and mentioned the famous “London Eye” Ferris wheel attraction as well as eating fish & chips every Friday at school. Cheltenham students shared their love for nachos, pizza and popcorn, plus favorite school activities – reading with their Kindergarten reading buddies and playing tag on the playground. The London students were surprised to learn that May 25 was the last day of school. In London, school session goes through the end of July with six weeks of break called holiday. The students discovered they had many interests in common including a love of football (soccer) as well as how fond they are of Justin Bieber and the television show The Voice.

The memorable experience was made possible by the Cheltenham’s ongoing partnership with Hogan Lovells Law Firm. Hogan Lovells is one of the founding companies to participate in the School Partners Program and continues to be the outstanding example of the innovative and unique ways companies can partner with schools to enhance students’ learning and exploration of the of the world.

Cheltenham Principal Art Kerkezian and students are excited to meet their London peers at Hogan Lovells office downtown Denver.
