Today, BBVA Compass and NBA Cares brought a day of service to Denver Public Schools.

The initiative – “Team. Works. In Schools” – is a joint effort by BBVA Compass and NBA Cares to revitalize schools across the bank’s footprint in the U.S. More than 100 BBVA Compass volunteers and 20 West Campus students were on hand in Denver to participate in the West High School revitalization project.

NBA legends Felipe Lopez, Rick Barry and Spencer Haywood, along with WNBA legend Bridget Pettis kick off Team. Works. In Schools with members of the Denver Public Schools district (including Superintendent Tom Boasberg second from right) and BBVA Compass at West High School. Revitalization efforts included fresh paint and murals, landscaping, the creation of a reading nook, a teachers’ lounge renovation and a new audio/visual system in the auditorium.

“Teaming up with the NBA on this initiative underscores our shared commitment to education and the importance of teamwork every day – whether in school, at the office or on the court,” said BBVA Compass Denver City President Cedric Buchanon.

Renovation efforts included fresh paint and murals throughout the schools, outdoor landscaping, the creation of a reading nook, and the refurbishment of the teachers’ lounge. Additionally, the project includes the donation of a new audio/visual system for the auditorium.

“The West Campus community is thrilled to reveal an improved learning environment and greater educational resources across its three campuses,” said Denver Public Schools Superintendent Thomas Boasberg. “Through the NBA Cares program and BBVA Compass’ joint initiative, these new enhancements will be seen and appreciated by many students and faculty for years to come.”

This marks the second year BBVA Compass and NBA Cares have teamed up to revamp schools across the bank’s footprint, making its first-ever stop in Denver. Over the course of this initiative, BBVA Compass employees have helped revitalize schools in Birmingham, Dallas, Houston, McAllen, Texas, Phoenix and San Antonio.

The Denver Public Schools Foundation’s School Partners Program played an instrumental role in connecting Team.Works. In Schools to West High School to complete the project. The School Partners Program cultivates, nurtures and sustains partnerships between DPS schools and the Denver community, like this one.
