Afterschool 2The Denver Lights On After School (LOAS) partnership, in its 10th year, is a collaboration amongst the Denver Public Schools Foundation, Mile High United Way, and the City and County of Denver. LOAS works to ensure quality, school-based after-school programs are sustained, and students are engaged, safe and enriching their learning experience in the critical 3 p.m. – 6 p.m. hours.

National Lights On Afterschool Day is Thursday, October 17th. In celebration of this national awareness event, after-school advocates from all across Denver are hosting events throughout this week to help inform the public about the benefits of these programs, and the vital need to expand them in our community.

  • Monday, October 14th – Denver City Council Meeting – 5:30 PM – City & County Building, 1437 Bannock Street, Room 450. Come to this open public event to hear remarks from city leaders, students and program providers!
  • Tuesday, October 15th – “Afterschool Matters” Lunch and Learn – 11:30 – 2:30 PM – McNichols Civic Center Building, 144 West Colfax Avenue, 2nd Floor.  Click here to register.
  • Thursday, October 17th – DPS School Board Meeting – 5:00 PM Grant Street, Boardroom.  Attend the meeting to show your support for after-school programs in DPS, which serve 17,000 students each year.

Facts about after-school programs in DPS:

Funding from the DPS Foundation provides safe, enriching and academically supportive after-school programs for 17,000 DPS students every year. Students enrolled in regular DPS after-school programs exhibit better school attendance, lower suspension rate and higher median growth percentile across reading, writing and math compared to their peers not enrolled in such programs.

  • Research shows that after-school programs can reduce barriers to youth success for students who are facing challenges such as low academic achievement, poverty and crime‐ridden neighborhoods.
  • Students in after-school programs have fewer behavioral problems and more self-confidence, and can handle conflicts better than students who are not involved with these programs.
  • National studies show parents without regular after-school care for their children miss eight more days of work per year than their peers whose children are in regular after-school programs.
