Jimena Cristerna, a junior at George Washington High School, exemplifies what’s possible when a student has great educators that support her. Jimena is the proud daughter of two immigrant parents who came here from Mexico before she was born. At home, Jimena helps her Spanish speaking parents navigate through the difficulties that come along with having a family member that is disabled. At school, Jimena thrives thanks largely in part to the support she’s received from DPS educators her entire life.
Commuting to George Washington from the Montbello neighborhood, Jimena loves her high school because it is enriching and she feels supported and challenged to grow, thanks to her educators. One of Jimena’s teachers taught her the importance of mental health and helped her to truly feel like she belongs.
