Last year, DPS high school student Sarah decided to run the Colfax Marathon as a way to get involved in the community. She had just moved to Denver from South Africa and thought it would be a great way to establish herself in Denver. Sarah is a typical high school senior who enjoys reading, art, playing the piano, swimming, and of course – running! The not so typical part about Sarah—she is a DPS student who is running to raise money for her DPS peers.

Sarah stands proudly after running the Colfax Half Marathon in 2015.

I ran for the DPS Foundation’s Colfax Marathon team because I love Denver Public Schools! I love being an East High School Angel for so many reasons. I appreciate our diversity, my classes are rigorous and challenging, and I have so many opportunities to be part of various clubs, activities and sport teams,” Sarah said.

As a self-proclaimed “non-runner,” Sarah said running the half marathon was a great way to challenge herself. To date, it is the longest race she has ever run. For Sarah, it was a no-brainer to choose to fundraise for the DPS Foundation due to all of the support that she has received while at East.

“It was difficult for me to step out of my comfort zone and ask for money because I didn’t want to be annoying to my friends and family, but I am so happy that I did it!” she said. “I know the money goes right back to support Denver schools, and that’s all the motivation I need!”

This year Sarah will be running the half marathon again with the goal to beat her time from last year’s race. She says she’s excited to run and fundraise again and adds that it is a good way to kick her summer off in a healthy way.

“I run for DPS students because I am one,” Sarah said. “For me it’s important to run for DPS so that all students can continue to have access to amazing resources to better our education.”
