broncos_whitter_sppOn the last week of school, students at Whittier K-8 were treated to a very special year-end celebration. On June 3rd, a crew of Broncos volunteers came out to spend the day with students, running them through a Broncos-training-inspired field day of activities, races, games and a visit from Miles the Mascot!

The field day was the culmination of the second year of partnership between Whittier and the Broncos.  The Broncos have worked to establish an ongoing relationship with the Whittier school community, funding key programs, volunteering and putting together special events like this one.

The Denver Broncos strive to improve the lives of Coloradans through youth, health, hunger and homeless relief initiatives. While their relationship with Denver Public Schools is many-faceted, including funding for middle school Futures Football and Fuel Up to Play60, their partnership with Whittier K-8 is unique.

broncos_whitter_spp2“It’s so special to have a real connection with the kids here at Whittier,” said Kelly, director of community development for the Broncos. “When you work regularly with one school like this, you really get to know the kids. They get to see you throughout the school year, in lots of different volunteer roles, and that consistency ends up meaning the kids trust us, and know that we care.”

“It’s important to me that we’re here today because you simply can’t give back enough,” said Bobby, another Broncos employee. “Especially here at Whittier, where we’ve developed such a great relationship with the school and the students over time, it’s a ton of fun to come out at the end of the year. In fact, I’m not sure who’s having more fun, the kids or the volunteers!”

Volunteers led students through circuits around the field, each with a different game, exercise or race. At the very end, students were rewarded with snow cones provided by the Whittier PTA and served by Denver Broncos cheerleaders, and the chance to spend time with Miles the Mascot.broncos_whitter_spp3

“I like running and exercise!” declared Monet, a Whittier student.

“Playing outside is fun,” agreed Jaliyah, another student.

“A big part of this is helping kids learn that being healthy – physical exercise, eating right – is all part of their success in school and beyond,” said Kelly. “As they hear us come out and talk with them throughout the year, they learn that we care about these things because we care about them. They see that they have extra people in their corner, and it makes a real difference to them. That’s what makes this relationship so special.”
